Getting Rid of Boredom in Your Marriage

Relationships are exciting at first. You and your new partner do things together. You have new experiences as a couple. You love your partner’s quirks. After a few years, you may plan to get married.

However, the honeymoon stage doesn’t last long. Reality sets in quickly. After a while, things aren’t as exciting anymore. In fact, your marriage may even become boring.

To some, boredom means comfort in a relationship. However, statistics show that boredom kills more marriages than conflict. That doesn’t necessarily mean that conflict is more exciting, but even partners in the most loving marriages argue from time to time. If you and your spouse aren’t talking much at all, then you have both probably checked out – not a good sign. Here are some ways to get rid of the boredom in your marriage and make life exciting once again.

Ask Questions

Think you know everything about your spouse? Even after 20 or 30 years of marriage, there are probably some things you don’t know. Your spouse has probably changed their mind about things over time. Ask about their opinions of world events. Ask them something about their childhood or something that happened at work. Your partner likely has more layers than you think.

Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

It’s easy to get into a rut. We wake up, work 9-5, cook dinner, watch TV, go to bed, repeat. We have a routine most of the week and then by the time the weekend rolls around, you may be too tired to do anything. Still, you need to get out of your comfort zone and do something different. Visit a new place. Try out a different restaurant. Do a hobby together. Attend a show together. You’ll feel closer to your spouse in the process.

Open Up and Share More

Sometimes marriage becomes boring because nobody shares anything new. It’s the same old thing: “How was your day? Fine.” Opening up and being vulnerable helps you bond with your spouse. Share more about your day or start with talking about shared experiences with your partner.

Surprise Each Other

OK, some people don’t like surprises, but we’re not talking about a party or anything too extravagant. Try a small gift. Do a chore that you usually don’t do, like cooking or laundry. It’s the thoughtfulness and spontaneity that can make your marriage feel fresh.

Seek Legal Help

Boredom is common after a couple has been together for a long time. However, if you don’t spice things up a little, you could end up with perpetual boredom, which can kill your marriage over time.

Life’s too short to be bored. If there’s no longer any excitement in your marriage, it may be time to end it. Seek legal help from Fort Lauderdale divorce lawyer Edward J. Jennings, P.A.
