Regretting Your Divorce? Here’s What People Wish They Did Differently

BrokenEngagement

Nobody gets married with the thought of divorcing down the line, but it happens to roughly half of all marriages. Something happens that destroys the marriage, leading to divorce.

Many people are happier after divorce. They are at peace with their decision. Then there are those who know they have made mistakes and regret them. They wish they had the hindsight to fix their mistakes while they were still married.

Divorce is costly. Once it’s finalized, it’s not something you can undo. Therefore, you want to make sure it’s what you really want to do. Here are some common regrets people have and what they wished they would have done.

Communicated More Effectively

Communication is important in marriages. It allows couples to express their thoughts and feelings in a meaningful way. It also fosters kindness, and respect, both which are essential for a healthy relationship. If both parties do not share their thoughts and feelings, it can lead to a breakdown in trust, which can make it difficult to resolve conflicts.

Given More Attention to Their Spouse

In a marriage, your spouse needs to be the most important person. They want to feel loved and wanted. When a spouse isn’t there for their partner, resentment starts to build up. They feel unimportant. Be sure to give your spouse the care and attention they deserve.

Appreciated Their Partner More

People tend to overestimate what they do and underestimate what others do. They may think their partner doesn’t do their fair share, but it’s important that they take a holistic look at everything their spouse does, whether it’s working, taking care of the kids, or maintaining the home or cars. Respect what your spouse does and be appreciative. They likely contribute a lot to the marriage – probably much more than you think.

Not Criticizing So Much

When everything that comes out of your mouth is an insult or criticism, it makes the relationship negative. You are pretty much blaming your spouse for your unhappiness, which is a recipe for disaster. Instead, be positive. Focus on what your spouse is doing right. Give them a break. Remember that nobody is perfect.

Not Having to Always Be Right

Nobody’s perfect. We all make mistakes, but there are people who like to argue because they always have to be right. You should not be focusing on “winning” an argument. Instead, listen to your spouse. Try to understand their point of view. When you focus on being right, there is imbalance in the marriage. The other spouse starts to feel unworthy.
