Reinventing Yourself After Divorce

ContemplativeWoman

Whether you were expecting it or not, a divorce can take you by surprise. It’s the process of ending a marriage that may have lasted 10, 20 or even 30 years or more. You will likely experience strong, negative emotions and they won’t go away overnight.

Not two divorces are the same. Everyone has a different story. But what you do after divorce determines your future. Will you mourn for many years or will you move on and live life to the fullest? What will your post-divorce life look like? Here are some ways to reinvent yourself after divorce.

Work Out Your Emotions

Don’t try to ignore your feelings. It’s normal to cry and feel angry. A divorce is like a death, and it’s perfectly normal to mourn your loss. It’s OK to feel remorse and regret, but you need to move on. Focus on a new hobby or seek help from a therapist.

Rediscover Your Prior Self

Now that you’re no longer in a relationship, post-divorce life is all about you. What activities did you use to enjoy? Maybe your spouse never liked to socialize or see movies. Now is the time to do these activities. Rediscover your passions so you can reinvent yourself.

Shake Things Up

Now that you have started to rediscover yourself, go a step further and shake things up a bit. Go out of your comfort zone and try something new. Get a bold new haircut. Buy a new outfit. Always wanted to live in the city? Now’s the time to experience these changes. As long as you’re being cautious and not hurting anyone, the sky’s the limit.

Date Differently

Once you’re ready to start dating again, consider dating people who are not necessarily your type. If you usually like shy women, consider an outgoing one. Only date rich men? Maybe try dating someone with not so much money. You don’t have to date with a relationship in mind. Just date to have fun and meet new types of people. You never know—you may have overlooked these people in the past, but you could actually end up meeting The One.

Learn and Embrace New Roles

You may have been the stay-at-home mom in the past, but now you have to learn to be the breadwinner. You’re now in charge of finances and everything else in your life, which is no easy task. But instead of getting frustrated, be open to learning new skills. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and learn from your mistakes. Things won’t always go as planned, but you will eventually gain a new sense of confidence.

Seek Legal Help

Divorce is a huge step. While it’s OK to mourn the end of your marriage, it’s also important to reshape your life and move on.
