Why Do People Marry and Divorce?

DivorceChairs

Our society expects adults to get married at some time, but of course, not all do. Some people would rather stay single. Others never find a suitable person to marry.

Marriage is meant to be a lifelong commitment. Living with the same person forever is a huge decision. There are a lot of factors that go into finding the right person to marry. It takes time and not everyone is compatible with each other.

People get married for different reasons, just like they get divorced for various reasons. The most common reason for divorce is irreconcilable differences, but that could mean a lot of things. People get married mostly for security, but that could mean various things as well.

A survey of 1,000 Americans who are divorced or who are in the process of divorcing gave Forbes a lot of insight about divorces and relationships in general. Understanding why couples marry and divorce can help you understand your own relationship better. You may even be able to avoid divorce and all the drama that comes with it.

Reasons People Get Married

Why do people get married? Love and money. Financial security was the most common motivating factor, cited by 42% of respondents. Women were more likely than men to marry for money. Love did come in a close second, though, at 39%.

Reason People Get Divorced

Simply not getting along is a common reason for divorce. However, infidelity remains a bigger issue, with 34% of survey respondents stating that their marriages ended due to an affair. If you decide to pursue a fault divorce, adultery is one of the choices you can use. However, a no-fault divorce is easier, so that’s what most couples pursue.

Other common causes of divorce include:

  • Lack of family support
  • Lack of intimacy
  • Too much conflict
  • Financial stress

These are all valid reasons to end a marriage. However, not everyone notices these signs until it’s too late. Family support is a major issue. When a family member or close friend disapproves of one of the parties or of the marriage in general, it can be stressful. Intimacy is important in a marriage, so when the couple is not intimate with each other and sex is irregular, it can throw the marriage off track and cause a lot of resentment. Conflict and stress over money are also major issues. Couples should be happy and when they are constantly at each other’s throats, it can be a frustrating situation.
